Configuring Printer Margins

Printer margins control the space between the edge of the paper and the printed content.

Deviking Order Autoprint allows margins to be configured per Print Rule, so different printers and document types can use different spacing.

1. Open the Print Rule

In your WordPress dashboard, go to:

Deviking Order Autoprint → Print Rules

Edit the rule you want to configure.

2. Locate the Margin Settings

Inside the printer or layout settings, adjust the document margins.

Depending on the selected format, you can configure spacing around the printed content.

Typical margin areas include:

  • Top
  • Right
  • Bottom
  • Left

3. Why Margins Matter

Correct margins help prevent:

  • Text being printed too close to the paper edge
  • Content being clipped
  • Logos being cut off
  • Tables extending outside the printable area
  • Thermal printer content wrapping incorrectly

4. A4 and A5 Printers

Standard office printers usually have a non-printable area around the edge of the paper.

If content is being clipped, increase the margins slightly.

If the document looks too compressed or has too much empty space, reduce them.

5. Thermal Printers

Margins are especially important on 80mm and 58mm thermal printers because the available width is limited.

On thermal printers, keep margins as small as possible while still staying inside the printer’s printable area.

Excessive side margins can significantly reduce the available space for:

  • Product names
  • Quantities
  • Prices
  • Totals

6. Windows Printer Driver Settings

The Windows printer driver may also apply its own printable area or margins.

If changing the Print Rule margins does not produce the expected result, check the printer preferences in Windows.

Some drivers may automatically:

  • Scale the document
  • Add non-printable borders
  • Reduce the usable paper width

7. Different Rules Can Use Different Margins

Margins are stored per Print Rule.

For example:

Packing List

  • Wider margins for clean A4 output

Kitchen Ticket

  • Minimal margins for maximum thermal paper width

Customer Receipt

  • Small balanced margins for compact printing

This allows each document type to be optimized independently.

8. Recommended Approach

Start with moderate margins and run a test print.

Then adjust gradually until:

  • No content is clipped
  • Text remains readable
  • The layout looks balanced
  • The printer uses the available paper area efficiently

9. Test After Every Major Change

After changing margins, run a test print before using the rule for automatic printing.

This is especially important when changing:

  • Printer model
  • Paper size
  • Orientation
  • Thermal paper width
  • Printer driver
